What questions do you ask to learn more about someone? Think about the following topic areas: Name, Herkunft, Alter, Familie, Hobbys und Freizeit, Freunde, Studium. Write 5-10 questions!

Sprechen

Stand up and ask each of your classmates a different question from your list. Carry on a friendly conversation about the topic at hand!

Write a short paragraph either summarizing some of the responses you heard or using the questions you brainstormed earlier to describe yourself.

Wortschatz

Review some of the vocabulary for family with the following activity.

Sprechen

Now it’s your turn: use the model in the exercise above to describe some of your family members to a partner. Can they guess the word that reflects the relationship you are describing?

Modell:

Frage: Wer ist die Mutter von meinem Vater?
Antwort: Deine Großmutter.

Strukturen

Komposita

We’ve already seen Komposita, or composite nouns. These are nouns that consist of two words “stuck together.” You may remember these examples:

das Schlafzimmer (schlafen + das Zimmer)
das Badezimmer (baden + das Zimmer)
die Großmutter (groß + die Mutter)
der Großvater (groß + der Vater)

For composite nouns, the final element determines the noun class, so in Schlafzimmer, for example, the final noun is Zimmer, which is a das-noun. So Schlafzimmer is also das Schlafzimmer.

Now make a guess: what do the following composite words mean? What is the class of these composite nouns?

Einzelkind
Großfamilie
Urgroßvater
Halbschwester

Look at the list of words below. Can you combine some of them with words you already know in order to describe people you consider family? Write a list of 3-5 words and then compare with classmates to see what you came up with. Tipp: think about combining with words like Schwester, Bruder, Familie, Vater, Mutter, usw.

halb – half
der Kern – core, nucleus
das Patchwork
stief – related to the word “Stufe”, meaning step
die Wahl – choice, selection

Hören

Vor dem Hören: Wortschatz

We’ve already reviewed a number of the vocabulary words that you’ll need for this section. Here are a few more that come up in this listening section and in this unit. See if you can figure out or remember what they mean: verheiratet, Geschwister, Partner*in, Lebensgefährte/Lebensgefährtin.

Strukturen

haben und sein

In this unit, we will be starting to work on past tense forms, but before we do, let’s review the present tense of some types of verbs. If you are still struggling with this, now would be a great time to get in some extra practice, before we move on to the past tense. Look for practice activities in the Erweiterung!

Two of the highest-usage verbs are haben and sein.  You will also need them for the perfect tense.

singularplural
ichhabewir haben
duhastihrhabt
SiehabenSiehaben
sie/es/er
xier/they
hatsiehaben

singularplural
ichbinwir sind
dubistihrseid
SiesindSiesind
sie/es/er
xier/they
istsiesind

Now practice using haben and sein with this exercise. Try to do this without looking back at the charts.

Regular Verbs

Regular verbs are verbs that follow a specific conjugation pattern.  For these verbs, remove the -en ending from the infinitive form, and add the appropriate ending:

singularplural
ich-ewir -en
du-stihr-t
Sie-enSie-en
sie/es/er
xier/they
-tsie-en

You’ll find exercises to practice regular verbs in the Erweiterung to this lesson.

Separable prefix verbs

Separable prefix verbs are conjugated in the same way that their counterpart without a prefix would be. For simple, declarative sentences and inversion questions, the prefix goes at the end of the sentence.

Modell:

Wir kaufen am Wochenende ein. (einkaufen)
Ich hole meine Schwester ab. (abholen)
Er räumt sein Zimmer auf. (aufräumen)

You’ll find exercises to practice prefix verbs in the Erweiterung to this lesson.
