Imperfekt: Präfixen und Stammwörter

A couple of things to think about when you’re practicing with Imperfekt.

Prefixes

You probably don’t need to be reminded about this, but if you have a verb with a separable prefix, the prefix will go to the end just like it does in the present tense. And if the prefix cannot be separated, it stays where it is.

einsteigen: Er stieg in den Zug ein.

erfahren: Er erfuhr etwas Neues.

Stammwörter

One thing that will help to expand your vocabulary and your ability to use these verbs correctly, is to remember that verbs that come from the same root are conjugated the same.  For example, this means that anything with a root of “fahren” is going to be a strong verb every time you see it.

erfahren
abfahren (sep)
anfahren (sep)
umfahren (sep)
verfahren
zerfahren

u.s.w.

Whether the prefix is separable or not, these will all be conjugated just like their root verb “fahren”
