Hotel, Pension, Gästehaus

Hotel, Pension oder Gästehaus?

Are you wondering what the difference is between the various types of accommodations? Here is a quick break-down. A Pension offers its guests simple rooms, a light breakfast and limited services. They are generally cheaper and smaller than hotels. A Gästehaus is similar to a Pension, but is found in more rural areas; a Gasthof has guest rooms and typically includes a restaurant. A Hotel is larger and will have daily housekeeping services, a restaurant open to the public, and many amenities available to guests. Finally, a Jugendherberge is a hostel intended for teenagers and young adults traveling on a budget. Guests are generally expected to share dormitory-style rooms.

Wortschatz

Sprechen

Wo übernachten Sie normalerweise?

Warum?
  2. Machen Sie eine Umfrage im Kurs. Wer übernachtet normalerweise in einem Hotel? In einer Jugendherberge? In einer Pension? In einer Ferienwohnung?

Lesen

Was ist Ihnen wichtig?

Gail: Die Lage, natürlich, also wo das Hotel liegt.

Take another look at the list of amenities above and jot down the things that are and are not important to you (look up the ones you don’t know). Then take turns talking about these with a partner or in a small group.

z.B. Der Preis ist mir sehr wichtig. Eine gute WLAN-Verbindung ist mir auch wichtig. Ein Fitnesszentrum ist mir unwichtig.

Strukturen

bei, in

The prepositions bei and in both have several different meanings, depending on the context in which they are used. When describing location, you need to use bei if you want to say that you are staying with someone. If you’re talking about a building (like a hotel, apartment, hostel, etc.), then use in. In this context (describing location), both of these prepositions use the dative case.

Example:

Ich übernachte bei Freunden.
Ich übernachte in einem Hotel.

Komparativ

Often when picking out accommodation in a new place, you will compare several options to find the best fit for your budget and your needs. See if you can recognize the comparative form in the exercise below.

As you can see, using the comparative (Komparativ) in German is quite simple: you just add an -er to the adjective or adverb.

Note that in this context als translates to than in English and directly follows the comparative:

Ein Hotel ist teurer als eine Jugendherberge.

PositivKomparativ
schönschöner
hellheller
interessantinteressanter
modernmoderner
kleinkleiner

There are some irregular forms to keep in mind.

PositivKomparativ
dunkeldunkler
gernlieber
großgrößer
gutbesser
nahnäher
vielmehr
teuerteurer

Zimmer vergleichen

Take a look at the pictures below. Select two to compare and discuss with your partner.
