This expectation exists on a personal level, on a national policy level, and on the international level.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Germany has had a number of environmental protection and\/or conservation organizations.\u00a0 These <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Environmental_Organizations_in_Modern_Ge.html?id=zPht3efRbQgC\">organizations<\/a> ranged from hunting groups concerned about the habitat for their chosen target to an organization dedicated to protecting song birds.\u00a0 \u00a0In the late 20th century, the 1987 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/science\/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps\/enquete-commissions\">Enqu\u00eate<\/a> Commission on Preventive Measures to Protect the Earth\u2019s Atmosphere laid key groundwork in the German government&#8217;s recognition of climate change both as scientific fact and policy, on the heels of the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Angela_Merkel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Merkel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was earning her doctorate in quantum Chemistry in Berlin.\u00a0 She was the German chancellor at the time of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fukushima_Daiichi_Nuclear_Power_Plant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fukushima Daiichi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nuclear disaster in 2011 in Japan.\u00a0 That same year, Germany announced that it was ending nuclear power production, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomausstieg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomausstieg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in German<\/span>, with a target date of 2020, although the target date has needed to be adjusted.<\/p>\n<p>On an individual level, there is a clear expectation that people do what they can to protect the environment.\u00a0 Recycling is mandatory, and also expensive.\u00a0 Municipal collection of compostable waste is common.\u00a0 This has the goal of limiting the amount of waste that an individual generates.\u00a0 New home construction is expected to meet stringent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwi.de\/Redaktion\/EN\/Dossier\/enhancing-energy-efficiency-in-buildings.html\">energy conservation standards<\/a>, as does renovation at a certain level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in reading more about German environmental organizations, consider reading:<\/p>\n<p>Markham, William T.\u00a0<i>Environmental Organizations in Modern Germany: Hardy Survivors in the Twentieth Century and Beyond<\/i>.
