In that case, the adjective endings are called &#8220;strong&#8221; because they provide lots of information about the noun. But if the article preceding the noun <em>does<\/em> supply that information, then the adjective takes a &#8220;weak&#8221; ending, either -e or -en. Those endings are called weak because they do not supply much information about the noun. This is why, for example, you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>der alt<strong>e<\/strong> Zug<\/em>: the definite article provides all the information you need. The adjective ending is weak and doesn&#8217;t need to supply much information.<\/li>\n<li>but <em>ein alt<strong>er<\/strong> Zug<\/em>: the indefinite article doesn&#8217;t provide all the information, so we need a strong adjective ending to provide that information.<\/li>\n<li>or <em>alt<strong>er<\/strong> Zug: <\/em>there is no article, so the adjective needs a strong ending that supplies all the possible information about the noun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remember: these rules only apply to attributive adjectives, the adjectives that precede a noun. Predicate adjectives, which follow a verb like sein or werden, don&#8217;t require adjective endings. Thus we have:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Ich fahre mit dem privaten Auto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">BUT<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Das Auto ist privat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One final note: many people think that adjective endings are one of the hardest topics in learning German. It takes a lot of practice to use adjective endings correctly.
