Ich pers\u00f6nlich finde das Denkmal sehr interessant. In den 1930er Jahren haben die Engl\u00e4nder vielen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">j\u00fcdischen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> und auch <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nichtj\u00fcdischen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kindern geholfen, vor den Nazis nach Gro\u00dfbritannien zu fliehen. Das waren die sogenannten Kindertransporte. Diese Reisen begannen oft am Westbahnhof, und deswegen steht das Denkmal heute da. Man geht durch die Stadt und denkt an ganz allt\u00e4gliche Sachen&#8211;pl\u00f6tzlich schaut man nach unten und merkt, dass man an einem tragischen Ort steht. Mit den kleinen, goldenen Steinen erinnert man an die Menschen, die von dem Ort ins KZ oder ins Todeslager deportiert wurden. Das Mahnmal steht auf dem <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zentralen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Judenplatz im 1. Bezirk, zusammen mit dem J\u00fcdischen Museum. Das Mahnmal ist ein gro\u00dfes Quadrat mit vielen B\u00fcchern, die nach innen gedreht sind&#8211;es soll an eine Bibliothek erinnern, nur kann man die Titel der B\u00fccher nicht lesen. Das symbolisiert die vielen j\u00fcdischen Geschichten, die man nie kennen wird. Auf dem Boden stehen die Namen der Orte, an denen die Juden ermordet wurden. Dort ist ein ehemaliges Konzentrationslager; heute ist es ein Gedenkst\u00e4tte. Wir haben das Lager besichtigt und \u00fcber die schrecklichen Dinge gelernt, die dort passiert sind. Der Guide hat uns sehr viele Informationen zu den H\u00e4ftlingen gegeben und wir haben auch viele Bilder und Texte angeschaut. Es gab z.B. H\u00e4ftlinge, die einen Fluchtversuch gemacht haben. The once thriving Jewish population, which largely shaped the cultural and intellectual boom in Vienna around 1900, sought exile abroad or suffered the same fate as millions of other Jews in Europe: they were deported to concentration camps or death camps. Like elsewhere in the Third Reich, concentration camps existed in Austria and Jews were persecuted ruthlessly.<\/p>\n<p>In Germany, the process of confronting this horrific past publicly began around 1968. For various reasons, Austria&#8217;s reckoning with its past did not begin until almost two decades later. In the Moscow Declaration of 1943, the Allies proclaimed Austria the first victim of Hitler and described the years of 1938-1945 as an occupation by foreign aggressors. The classification as Hitler&#8217;s &#8220;first victim&#8221; allowed the Second Republic of Austria to eschew responsibilities for the atrocities committed during the Nazi era for several decades following the end of World War II.<\/p>\n<p>However, after the scandalous Waldheim Affair in 1986 (during which Kurt Waldheim was elected president, despite having lied about his service in the Nazi military during his campaign), Austria was forced to confront its controversial past for the first time publicly. Gradually, the public rhetoric surrounding Austria&#8217;s role in Hitler&#8217;s Third Reich has shifted from &#8220;victim&#8221; to culpable participant. In the decades following this important turning point, serious efforts have been made to acknowledge and atone for past crimes committed in Austria during the Nazi era. In 2000, the Holocaust Memorial, designed by Rachel Whiteread, was unveiled on the prominent <em>Judenplatz<\/em> of the First District in Vienna.
