Take a look at the poem above, and try the following strategies.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the title of the poem? Does that tell you anything about what to expect?<\/li>\n<li>Read the poem aloud.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to the things that rhyme. Write them down.<\/li>\n<li>Look up any words that you aren&#8217;t sure of or that aren&#8217;t already glossed. Be careful though, it&#8217;s not necessary to look up every word.<\/li>\n<li>Read the poem again and pay attention to the nouns and adjectives. What do they tell you about the meaning? What feeling to you get from the text?<\/li>\n<li>Read the poem again and see if there is a pattern to the words. Are there opposites or word pairs that could be important?<\/li>\n<li>Read the poem one last time. What is the poet trying to communicate?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Ein Gedicht analysieren<\/h3>\n<p>We won&#8217;t get into deep textual analysis here, but take a look at your notes on the poem and write a short &#8211; 150 word &#8211; analysis of what you think the poet is trying to say. Why does the poet, or the lyrical voice (lyrisches Ich) travel? According to the most current spelling rules in German, \u00df should always follow a long vowel or a diphthong, and &#8220;ss&#8221; will follow short vowels. So, technically these words should be spelled\u00a0<em>s\u00fc\u00df<\/em> and <em>Stra\u00dfe<\/em>. However, when dealing with printed historical texts in their original orthography, it is common to see &#8220;ss&#8221; in place of \u00df because the \u00df was not formally adopted by typesetters in Roman type until the beginning of the 20th century.
