In English when we tell people how to do something, we often say &#8220;you&#8221; in an impersonal way &#8211; especially when telling someone what they can do, or how to get somewhere. In German, you use the word &#8220;man&#8221; which essentially translates to &#8220;one&#8221;. You conjugate the verb just like you would for sie\/es\/er.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One travels with the U-Bahn &#8212; Man f\u00e4hrt mit der U-Bahn.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds old-fashioned in English, but it&#8217;s just how it works in German.<\/p>\n<p>Two things to note:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;man&#8221; is only written with an upper case &#8220;m&#8221; when it comes at the beginning of the sentence, otherwise it&#8217;s written with a lowercase &#8220;m&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;man&#8221; is not the same as &#8220;Mann&#8221;. &#8220;Mann&#8221; means man or husband.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"max-width: 850px;\"><div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-84\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"84\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Struktur - man\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<br\/>\r\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a href=\"#top\" class=\"wp-element-button\" style=\"border-radius:10px;\"> zur\u00fcck nach oben<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<br\/>\n<div class=\"lesson-heading kultur\">\r\n<h2>Kultur<\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\n<h3><em>frau<\/em> als Pronomen<\/h3>\n<p>Although the pronoun <em>man<\/em> is officially gender neutral, its derivation from the gendered word <em>Mann<\/em> is clear. For this reason, you sometimes find,\u00a0particularly in feminist publications,\u00a0the use of the word <em>frau<\/em>, written in the lower case, as an alternative indefinite pronoun. When we&#8217;re talking about the city, it&#8217;s particularly important to be able to describe and understand where things are. For right now, we will only be using these prepositions in the dative, but keep in mind, that they can also be used with the accusative case, and you&#8217;ll be learning more about that later.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Just as with the other dative prepositions, these can be formed into contractions.
