This is because &#8220;mit&#8221; is a preposition and it changes the case of the noun. You&#8217;ve already learned about the nominative and accusative cases, now we&#8217;re going to learn about dative. You can usually figure out what they mean from context, but we&#8217;re going to go over a few of them over the next few lessons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">aus<br \/>\nau\u00dfer<br \/>\nbei<br \/>\nmit<br \/>\nnach<br \/>\nseit<br \/>\nvon<br \/>\nzu<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, you have already used some of these prepositions, without even knowing that they were dative.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re going to focus on just a couple of them that are useful for talking about modes of transportation, but we&#8217;ll go over more of them throughout this section. These are contractions. They combine the prepositions with the articles. In der Stadt fahre ich fast immer mit der Tram. Es gibt eine Haltestelle direkt vor meiner Wohnung. Ich kann nicht weit laufen und das passt mir sehr gut. Ich steige einfach ein und bekomme fast immer einen Sitz. Die Tram f\u00e4hrt immer rechtzeitig ab und ich komme \u00fcberall hin. Manchmal fahre ich mit der U-Bahn, aber ich kann die Treppen nicht laufen. Ich muss den Aufzug benutzen. Den Bus finde ich auch sehr praktisch. Wenn ich zum Flughafen fahren muss, fahre ich mit dem 13A Bus bis zum Hauptbahnhof. In this lesson we&#8217;re learning about another type of verbs &#8211; verbs with separable prefixes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prefixes<\/strong> are words attached to the beginning of other words, that often change the meaning of the word. We have them in English: <strong>re<\/strong>view, <strong>be<\/strong>come, <strong>un<\/strong>do. German uses prefixes as well and with verbs there are two types of prefixes.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>separable prefixes<\/strong> &#8211; these separate from the verb and move to the end of the sentence or phrase.
