Ich bin dort in den Kindergarten gegangen, in die Grundschule und bin auch im Sportverein t\u00e4tig.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susi ist eine Lehrerin in Linz: <em>Ich habe immer gedacht, ich kenne meinen Wohnort sehr gut. Allerdings war ich in der letzten Schulwoche mit einem Kollegen unterwegs, der die Kunstgeschichte von Linz sehr gut kennt und uns davon erz\u00e4hlt hat, und ich habe festgestellt, es gibt immer noch etwas zu lernen. Es gibt in Linz professionelle Stadtf\u00fchrerInnen, die so Themenf\u00fchrungen machen: das Linz der Frau und das Linz der Obdachlosen und so weiter. Und auch wenn man schon viel wei\u00df, gibt es immer noch was Neues zu erfahren. Es gibt so Touren mit einem Nachtw\u00e4chter, der wieder ganz andere Schwerpunkte setzt. Also das hei\u00dft, jedes Mal, wenn ich mit Sch\u00fclerInnen so eine Tour mache, lerne ich trotzdem etwas dazu, auch wenn ich hier geboren bin und auch schon viel wei\u00df<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Barbara wohnt auch in Burgberg im Allg\u00e4u:\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ich kenne meinen Wohnort. Es ist nicht meine Heimat in dem Sinne, aber ich kenne ihn auch, weil ich dort seit 20 Jahren lebe.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Christine wohnt in dem 15. Bezirk in Wien: <em>I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch wohne seit meiner Geburt in Wien und in diesem Bezirk und i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch kenne meinen Wohnort entsprechend gut. Ich kenne den Wohnort wirklich so gut, dass ich ja auch bemerke, was sich ver\u00e4ndert hat, dass ich mitverfolgen kann, welche Entwicklungen in der Stadt stattfinden.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Wie gut kennen Sie Ihre Nachbar*innen?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna: <em>Ja, ich kenne jeden meiner Nachbarn\/Nachbarinnen, denn wenn man sich sieht, gr\u00fc\u00dft man sich und wechselt auch ein paar W\u00f6rter miteinander.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susi:\u00a0<em>Ich wohne in einem Reihenhaus. Wir haben sieben NachbarInnen, die in genau gleichen H\u00e4usern wohnen wie wir. Die kenne ich alle sehr gut. Es ist eine Mischung von Leuten, die unter den ersten waren, die hierher eingezogen sind, und dann gibt&#8217;s welche, die sp\u00e4ter dazugekommen sind. Ich kenne sie alle eigentlich solange wie ich meinen Mann kenne, abgesehen von denen, die sp\u00e4ter zugezogen sind. Das hei\u00dft, wir sind uns vertraut.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Barbara: <em>I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch kenne alle meine Nachbarn und Nachbarinnen. Wir gr\u00fc\u00dfen uns. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wir kennen einander, seit wir dort oben leben. Mit dem einen hat man mehr Kontakt und mit dem anderen weniger Kontakt, aber Kontakt haben wir mit allen NachbarInnen. In unserer Nachbarschaft leben circa 6 Familien. Und das hat sich die letzten Jahre nicht ver\u00e4ndert.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Christine:\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ich kenne sie teilweise. Wir haben gro\u00dfteils eher oberfl\u00e4chliche Kontakte, das hei\u00dft diese\u2014wie wir sagen\u2014Aufzuggespr\u00e4che, wenn wir mit dem Aufzug in den 5. Stock fahren, ergeben sich allgemeine Gespr\u00e4che \u00fcber das Wetter, \u00fcber die Situation im Haus. Wir sind mit einer Nachbarsfamilie befreundet. Das sind die, die wir auch manchmal zu uns einladen, und manchmal laden sie uns zum Essen ein. The verb is always second, except in dependent clauses (<em>Nebens\u00e4tze<\/em>), when the verb is in the last position, or for yes or no questions, when the verb comes first.<\/p>\n<p>But general trends and rules do apply to other elements in German word order. You&#8217;ve probably noticed, for example, that German sentences that don&#8217;t begin with the subject often begin with a word or phrase that describes time. For example: <em><strong>Nach dem Jahr im Ausland<\/strong> bin ich nach Wien zur\u00fcckgezogen<\/em>. That&#8217;s because elements of time tend to occur earlier in German sentences than other elements. In fact, the general rule of thumb when ordering pieces of information in a German sentence is <em>time<\/em> then <em>manner<\/em> then <em>place<\/em>. Those elements could also be defined by the questions they answer: wann, wie, wo(hin). Often one of those elements will be placed before the verb, but if not, TMP is the best way to order elements in a sentence. Let&#8217;s look at a few examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Ich fahre n\u00e4chste Woche mit dem Zug nach Linz.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ich bin in der letzten Schulwoche mit einem Kollegen in Linz unterwegs.<br \/>\nIch gehe jeden Tag ganz fr\u00fch in die Schule.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In each of these examples, you&#8217;ll notice the Time-Manner-Place ordering of the description of the action taking place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Ich fahre n\u00e4chste Woche mit dem Zug nach Linz.<br \/>\n<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0time:<em> n\u00e4chste Woche\u00a0 [wann?]<br \/>\n<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0manner:<em> mit dem Zug\u00a0[wie?]<br \/>\n<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0place:<em> nach Linz\u00a0[wohin?] <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t have all three elements, time, manner, and place, in your sentence? The definite articles (der, die, das) are strong in the sense that they provide as much information about the noun as possible in terms of gender, case, and number. The goal of adjective endings is provide as much information about the noun as those definite articles do. So, if the definite article precedes the noun, then the adjective doesn&#8217;t have as much work to do; the adjective can have a &#8220;weak&#8221; ending (-e or -en). But if the noun is NOT preceded by the definite article, then the adjective ending has more work to do; then the adjective needs a &#8220;strong&#8221; ending to provide the missing information.<\/p>\n<p>Review the chart above with this tip in mind and see if it helps you understand the patterns that you see.
