This is a common practice in German-speaking countries where people often remove not only movable furniture, but also built-in elements when they change apartments\/houses. Kitchens can be left behind if the new renters have agreed to take over the old kitchen. This relatively expensive practice is an indication that moving in German-speaking countries happens less often.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You were introduced to the expression <em>die K\u00fcche ausbauen<\/em>, which is the way Karin discussed taking apart her kitchen for her upcoming move. Und dann bin ich in das M\u00f6belhaus gegangen und die M\u00f6beldesignerin hat gesagt, was m\u00f6glich ist und was nicht m\u00f6glich ist. Weil ich noch viel mehr Ideen hatte und es nicht alles m\u00f6glich war, weil der Raum zu klein ist. Am Anfang war die M\u00f6beldesignerin mit mir im Gesch\u00e4ft. Dann bei der M\u00f6belmontage waren die Handwerker selbst Tischler, die die K\u00fcche \u00fcber einen ganzen Tag lang zusammengebaut haben. Dann waren Installateure auch da, die haben den Geschirrsp\u00fcler und den Abwasserabfluss angeschlossen. Elektriker hatte ich keine. Die Arbeitsleuchte musste zwar angeschlossen werden, aber das konnten die Tischler machen; also, ein Elektriker war nicht notwendig. Und davor hatte ich Maler. Meine K\u00fcche war schon alt und ein bisschen abgewohnt und ich wollte sie wieder neu gestrichen haben. Deswegen kamen die Maler davor und haben alles gestrichen und einen neuen, kleinen, frischen Boden gelegt, der dunkelgrau ist. It consists of a helping verb, <em>haben<\/em> or <em>sein<\/em>, and a participle. Here are some more examples from the listening:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ich <em>habe<\/em> so Selbstbaum\u00f6bel <em>gehabt<\/em>.<br \/>\nIch <em>bin<\/em> in ein M\u00f6belhaus <em>gefahren<\/em> und <em>habe<\/em> mit einer M\u00f6beldesignerin gemeinsam f\u00fcr meine K\u00fcche <em>geplant<\/em>.<br \/>\nIch <em>habe<\/em> eine K\u00fcche auf dem Computer <em>kreiert<\/em>.<br \/>\nUnd sie <em>hat<\/em> mir dabei <em>geholfen<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>das Partizip<\/h4>\n<p>Remember that the <em>Partizip<\/em>, or past participle, of weak verbs is formed by adding a &#8220;ge-&#8221; to the beginning of the verb stem and then a &#8220;-t&#8221; to the end of the stem. The past participle of strong verbs ends in an &#8220;-en&#8221; and there may well be a vowel change in the participle. Sadly, the only way to know this is to memorize those irregular verbs\u2014or look them up in a dictionary. As you&#8217;re working with the vocabulary lists in this curriculum, we hope you&#8217;ll note which verbs are irregular or strong and will make sure you&#8217;re learning the principal parts.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of weak verbs from above<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">planen &gt;&gt; geplant<br \/>\nkreiern &gt;&gt; kreiert<\/p>\n<p>And here are some examples of strong verbs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">helfen &gt;&gt; geholfen<br \/>\nfahren &gt;&gt; gefahren<\/p>\n<p>Note that verbs that end in &#8220;-ieren&#8221; do not take a &#8220;ge-&#8221; before them; thus <em>studieren &gt;&gt; studiert<\/em> and <em>m\u00f6blieren &gt;&gt; m\u00f6bliert<\/em>. And verbs with inseparable prefixes, such as be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, zer-\u00a0 also do not take a &#8220;ge-&#8221; at the beginning. The reason for these types of exceptions? It just sounds too funny given how those verbs are pronounced and where the accent is placed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 800px;\"><div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-136\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"136\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Match the participles to their infinitive forms\n\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<h4>Hilfsverb: <em>haben<\/em> oder <em>sein<\/em>?<\/h4>\n<p>Note that some of these examples above use the helping verb <em>haben<\/em> and some use the helping verb <em>sein<\/em>.\u00a0When do you use <em>sein<\/em> as a helping verb? Well, when the verb describes a change of state or location and does not take a direct object, then you should use <em>sein<\/em> as the helping verb. And then you need to know a few verbs that take <em>sein<\/em> just because that&#8217;s the way it is. Those are few and easy to remember: sein, bleiben, passieren\/geschehen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">change of state: <em>Ich bin eingeschlafen.<\/em> [I fell asleep&#8211;my state changed from being awake to being asleep.]<br \/>\naber:<em> Ich habe geschlafen.<\/em> [this describes a state rather than a change of state.]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">change of location: <em>Ich bin in ein M\u00f6belhaus gefahren<\/em>.<br \/>\naber:<em> Ich habe den Lastwagen gefahren<\/em>. You can think of it this way: the prefix is separated from the main part of the verb because it is written before the &#8220;ge-&#8220;.
