I’d like to live with someone who is easy-going. I’d like to live with someone whom I like. These sentences all include relative clauses. What are relative clauses? Well, they are phrases that typically begin with who or that or which and that describe a person or a thing (a noun) in more detail. Here are the relative clauses in those sample sentences:

I’d like to live with someone who laughs a lot.
I’d like to live with someone who is easy-going.
I’d like to live with someone whom I like.

In each of these cases, the relative clauses provide more information about the “someone” referenced, and for that reason, relative clauses are a powerful tool for adding detail and clarity to your speech. Note that relative clauses cannot stand on their own, because they only make sense when they are in the same sentence as the noun that they describe. Plus, a relative clause on its own would be an incomplete sentence.

In German, relative clauses are used in the same way as in English. Just like in English, relative clauses in German (ein Relativsatz oder Relativsätze) begin with a relative pronoun and are a type of dependent clause (Nebensatz). As such they cannot stand alone. This also means that the verb stands at the end of the relative clause, just like in other dependent clauses in German (like after weil or wenn). You already heard several examples of relative clauses in Mathilde’s description of a Wohngemeinschaft; for example: “Eine Wohngemeinschaft ist das Zusammenleben von Menschen, die nicht miteinander verwandt sind und die sich das freiwillig ausgesucht haben, dass sie miteinander wohnen wollen.” The die here is the relative pronoun referring back to Menschen. In other words, Mathilde is describing more specifically who the people are in her definition of a WG, providing more detail and clarity through her use of a relative clause.

Notice that the third English example above uses the relative pronoun whom instead of who. That’s because it’s the direct object within the relative clause: I like the someone being described here, so it’s the direct object of my liking. And, yes, you guessed it: German relative pronouns come in various different classes, numbers, and cases. Here are a few examples:

Here is a chart with the relative pronouns in German. They should look pretty familiar to you!

Noun Class

Nominitive

Accusative

Dative

pl

die

die

denen

die

die

die

der

das

das

das

dem

der

der

den

dem

dier

dier

dien

diem

So, to summarize so far:

a relative clause begins with a relative pronoun

a relative clause is a type of dependent clause

the verb goes at the end of a relative clause

But how do you know which case to put the relative pronoun in? Well, the class and number of the relative pronoun are determined by the noun to which it refers (called the antecedent or Bezugswort), but the case is determined by the role the relative pronoun plays in the relative clause. Is it the subject or object? A few examples should help you see how this works.

Spiel

Write down a few descriptions of people or things in the classroom.
