Here is a closer look at the meaning of high-frequency prefixes in the context of cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of\u00a0<em>putzen,\u00a0<\/em>many of the verbs begin with ab- because it denotes the idea of removing something.<br \/>\nIn English, this notion is expressed with the separable preposition <em>off<\/em> as in <em>to dust off, to wash off.<\/em>\u00a0Often we specify the object (to wipe off the table), but sometimes people drop this extension, ending the expression with the preposition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>ab<\/strong>\/stauben &#8211; to dust <strong>off<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ab<\/strong>\/trocknen &#8211; to dry <strong>off<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ab<\/strong>\/waschen &#8211; to wash <strong>off<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ab<\/strong>\/wischen &#8211; to wipe <strong>off<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Auf-<\/em><\/strong>, too, is used with several verbs, introducing the meaning of clearing something up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>auf<\/strong>\/heben &#8211; to pick <strong>up<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>auf<\/strong>\/r\u00e4umen &#8211; to clean <strong>up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Auf-<\/em><\/strong> can also carry the meaning of open(ing) versus close(ing), as in\u00a0<em>die T\u00fcr aufmachen\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>das Fenster zumachen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>auf<\/strong>\/machen &#8211; to open <strong>up<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>zu<\/strong>\/machen &#8211; to close <strong>down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the prefixes are transparent, such as sauber = clean and staub = dust.
