But the verb is umziehen, written together as one word in the infinitive. Remember those separable prefix verbs? Well, there are several such verbs that you will need in a discussion of moving, such as you’ll hear in the next video interview.

um/ziehen = to move: Ich ziehe von einem Haus in ein anderes Haus um.
ein/ziehen = to move in: Ich ziehe in eine neue Wohnung ein.
aus/ziehen = to move out. Ich ziehe aus meinem alten Studentenwohnheimzimmer aus.

Remember that separable verbs separate, as their name indicates, and you need to place the prefix at the end of the sentence or phrase. You’ll do more work with these in the Erweiterung to this lesson.

Verbs with Accusative vs. Dative

Some verbs in German are normally associated with the use of accusative or dative along with two-way prepositions. This makes sense, because some verbs, like liegen or stehen, describe location, while some verbs, like legen or stellen, describe the action of placing something somewhere. In other words, certain verbs that indicate the action towards a destination are more naturally associated with the accusative case when two-way prepositions are involved. Some examples are included in the table below.

Verbs with Accusative

Verbs with Dative

legen (to lay)

liegen (to lie)

stellen (to place)

stehen (to stand)

setzen (to set)

sitzen (to sit)

hängen (to hang up)

hängen (to hang)

sein (to be)

Welches Verb?

zurück nach oben

Hören

Video 1: Britt

Arbeit mit dem Hören 1

<iframe id="h5p-iframe-54" class="h5p-iframe" data-content-id="54" style="height:1px" src="about:blank" frameBorder="0" scrolling="no" title="Was hat Britt? Accusative is used to indicate the direct object of a sentence (what is being acted upon) and to express destination with two-way prepositions. And, just like with the dative case, there are some prepositions that always use accusative. Let’s take a quick minute to review all these functions of accusative.

Direct Object

A direct object is acted upon. In the texts in this lesson, you’ve seen multiple examples of this. Hanna, Britt, and Isolde have or possess certain pieces of furniture, they buy certain furniture, and they move furniture into place. Here are some examples:

Hanna hat ein Bett.
Eine Lampe muss Britt noch kaufen.
Isolde stellt den Fernseher auf den Fernsehschrank.

Remember that the indirect object indicates to whom or for whom the action is done, whereas the direct object is the actual recipient of the action. We could even explain Britt’s intention and add an indirect object to her sentence: ich kaufe mir eine neue Lampe. In that sentence, Britt is the subject, the lamp is the direct object, and Britt is also the indirect object, because she is purchasing the lamp for herself.

Two-Way Prepositions

Accusative case is used with two-way prepositions to express destination: wohin? Again, you’ve seen many examples of this in this lesson, and you’ll be doing some exercises in the Erweiterung as homework. Here are just a few examples:

Hanna stellt den Schreibtisch in das Arbeitszimmer.
Britt stellt den Kleiderschrank an die Wand.
Vor die Couch legt Isolde den Teppich.

Note that these examples all have two nouns in the accusative–one is the direct object (den Schreibtisch in the first example) and one is the object of the preposition (das Arbeitszimmer in the first example).

Accusative Prepositions

Some prepositions that you’ve seen are always used with the accusative case. You will work more with these prepositions in the future, but for now you should simply be aware that they exist so that you can recognize them when you see them and understand why they occur with accusative. Here is a list of common prepositions that take the accusative:

bis = until
durch = through
entlang = along
für = for
gegen = against
ohne = without
um = at, around

Accusative Pronouns

PERSONALPRONOMEN

Nominativ

Akkusativ

1.
