You learned about the use of dative with two-way prepositions and you have also encountered dative verbs such as <em>schmecken<\/em> and <em>passen<\/em> in another <em>Einheit<\/em>. Below you have more detailed information and additional practice with these topics, but you also review one more role of the dative: the dative and indirect objects.<\/p>\n<h4>Dative and two-way prepositions<\/h4>\n<p>When combined with two-way prepositions (an, auf, hinter, neben, unter, \u00fcber, vor, zwischen), dative indicates a location.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Pl:<\/strong> Wo sind deine B\u00fccher? Sie stehen auf\u00a0<strong>den\u00a0<\/strong>Regalen.<br \/>\n<strong>die<\/strong>: Wo steht der Herd? Ich sitze lieber auf\u00a0<strong>dem\u00a0<\/strong>Stuhl.<\/p>\n<div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-38\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"38\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Fill in the missing words\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h4>The dative and indirect objects<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at a basic sentence, <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>subject (nominative)<\/strong> tells you who does the verb, who completes the action:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Die Frau<\/strong> kauft.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the subject acts upon is <strong>the direct object (accusative)<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Die Frau kauft\u00a0<strong>das Haus<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you want to add for whom or to whom the subject does something, you use <strong>the dative as an indirect object<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Die Frau kauft\u00a0<strong>der Freundin<\/strong> das Haus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Because the dative answers the question of\u00a0<em>to whom<\/em> or <em>for whom<\/em>, it often refers to a person. In this example: for whom does the woman buy the house? There are some verbs in German which have only an object in the dative. Often, they do not have any other object. It is best to memorize these verbs. You have been working with the following dative verbs so far:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>gefallen<\/strong> &#8211; to like: Ich lerne gern Deutsch. Die Sprache gef\u00e4llt mir.<br \/>\n<strong>geh\u00f6ren<\/strong> &#8211; to belong: Das Haus geh\u00f6rt der Professorin.<br \/>\n<strong>passen<\/strong> &#8211; to fit: Die Hose ist zu kurz.
