But the dative case plays another important role in German: It indicates when a noun or a pronoun is the indirect object of a sentence. What is the indirect object? As you know, the direct object of a sentence is the thing being acted upon; for example, in the sentence, &#8220;I bought a new bed,&#8221;<em> I<\/em> am the subject, the one doing the action, and the <em>bed<\/em> is the object, the thing being acted upon. Remember that the direct object is always in the accusative case. The indirect object answers the question,<em> to whom<\/em> or <em>for whom\u00a0<\/em>is the action being done.\u00a0If we expand our example to &#8220;I bought my daughter a new bed,&#8221; then <em>my daughter<\/em> is the indirect object, the person for whom the bed is purchased.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Du gewinnst im Lotto. Was f\u00fcr ein Haus kaufst du wem?<\/h4>\n<p>Time for a German example! Say you won the lottery and you had tons of money, but the money had to be used to purchase housing. What would you buy for whom? Let&#8217;s construct a few sentences with both dative (indirect) and accusative (direct) objects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ich kaufe meiner Mutter eine H\u00fctte.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ich kaufe meinem Freund eine Wohnung in der Stadt.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dissect those example sentences: What is the subject (i.e., who is doing the action in the sentence)? What is the direct object (i.e., what is being acted upon)? What is the indirect object (i.e., to whom or for whom is the action being done)? Then construct\u2014by writing and\/or speaking with a partner\u2014a few additional sentences following this pattern and using the suggestions below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>for whom<\/strong>: Mutter, Vater, Eltern, Bruder, Schwester, Geschwister, Partner*in, Freund*in, Professor*in, Mitbewohner*in, usw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>what<\/strong>:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Einfamilien-)Haus, W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ohnung (Altbauwohnung, Neubauwohnung), Wohnblock, Reihenhaus, H\u00fctte, H\u00e4uschen, Ferienhaus oder Ferienwohnung, Villa, Hochhaus, (Studenten)Wohnheim, Bauernhof<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usw.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The verbs\u00a0<em>geh\u00f6ren<\/em> and <em>gefallen<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>The verb <em>geh\u00f6ren<\/em> is another dative verb that functions like <em>gefallen<\/em>. It might be helpful to think of these verbs as conveying a type of indirect object; in other words, <em>gefallen<\/em> means something is pleasing <strong>to me<\/strong> and <em>geh\u00f6ren<\/em> means something belongs <strong>to me<\/strong>.
