Notes about German Pronunciation

• German pronunciation is straightforward—usually you pronounce every letter in the word. In other words, once you learn the German alphabet, you should be able to read any German text aloud.
• The emphasis is usually on the first syllable of a German word.
• Note in the video that there are several German diphthongs, i.e., combinations of vowels. These you need to learn individually. The “ei” and “ie” in German tends to give new German learners trouble, so spend some time practicing those.

 

 

Regular Verbs

You have already learned how to conjugate regular German verbs. Let’s review regular verbs in the present tense by using two verbs that are important for this lesson: buchstabieren and schreiben. Buchstabieren means to spell, and schreiben means to write. If you want to know how to spell a word, you could ask the following question:

Wie schreibt man das?

Wie buchstabiert man das?
